Power Sustainable Lios takes majority stake in Fine Choice Foods
Context
Power Sustainable Lios acquired a majority interest in Fine Choice Foods on 22 October 2026 from Swander Pace Capital, which exited in full after eight years. Farm Credit Canada and Bonnefield Financial took minority positions alongside, the latter through its agribusiness fund. Chief executive Jason Longden and the management team remained in place. Founded in 1986 by the Lui family as a Vancouver shop selling frozen dim sum, Fine Choice Foods produces refrigerated Asian-style appetisers under the SUMM! brand: spring rolls, gyoza dumplings, bao buns and dessert rolls. It employs more than 300 people across two plants in Richmond, British Columbia, totalling over 100,000 square feet of production space, and supplies grocery chains and warehouse clubs in Canada and the United States. Selling chilled rather than frozen is what distinguishes the business and what makes it difficult to replicate. Refrigerated products are perceived as fresher and cook faster, but they carry short shelf lives and require food safety protocols and a cold chain that reach from the plant to the shelf. Building that capability across two countries took the company years, and it is the barrier a competitor faces. Under Swander Pace Capital, which acquired the business in 2018, EBITDA tripled through investment in sales, product development and manufacturing capacity, while distribution extended across both markets. The purchase was the fifth from Power Sustainable Lios’s first fund, which holds 285 million dollars, and followed its acquisition of Crofter’s Organic in January. It also marked an early step in Power Sustainable’s stated intention to direct at least 10 billion dollars towards Canadian companies and infrastructure over five years. The new owners intended to widen the product range and extend distribution within the United States. BMO Capital Markets acted as exclusive financial adviser to Fine Choice Foods and Swander Pace Capital, with Stikeman Elliott as legal counsel.
