Iterchimica acquired by Officine Maccaferri
Context
Officine Maccaferri agreed on 6 October 2026 to acquire Iterchimica from the Giannattasio family, alongside the American company Surface Tech, establishing a high-performance materials division within the group. Completion remained subject to regulatory and competition approvals. Federica Giannattasio continued to lead the business and, with her siblings, reinvested to become a shareholder of the acquiring group, itself a portfolio company of Ambienta’s fourth fund. Founded in 1967 at Suisio in the province of Bergamo, Iterchimica develops and manufactures the additives mixed into asphalt during production, which determine how the material behaves once laid: how long it resists cracking and rutting, and what proportion of reclaimed asphalt the mix can incorporate. Its customers are asphalt producers and road contractors, principally across Europe. The company states that its formulations extend pavement life by more than 75% and permit recycled content of up to 100%, and that its Gipave product reduces carbon emissions by around 40% against conventional methods. Road construction consumes bitumen, a petroleum product whose extraction and processing account for a substantial share of the emissions attributed to civil infrastructure, estimated at five to eight per cent of the global total. An additive extending the life of a surface reduces how often it must be relaid, while one permitting reclaimed asphalt to be reused displaces virgin bitumen directly, and the two together address the same cost for the road authority as for the atmosphere. The combination gives Maccaferri a position across the full depth of a pavement, from the geosynthetics reinforcing the ground beneath it through the additives governing the asphalt above, which allows the group to specify the structure as a whole rather than supply components into a design made by others.
