Hunter Communications acquired by Oak Hill Capital
Context
Oak Hill Capital signed a definitive agreement on 10 December 2025 to acquire Hunter Communications from Grain Management, and completed the transaction on 31 March 2026. Grain Management exited in full, having first invested in 2020, and chief executive Michael Wynschenk stayed at the head of the company. Founded in 1994 and based in Medford, Oregon, Hunter operates more than 3,000 route miles of fibre, passing around 100,000 premises and serving close to 35,000 customers across southern and western Oregon and parts of northern California. It sells residential subscriptions alongside dedicated connectivity and hosted voice services to businesses and larger organisations. Under Grain Management’s ownership the network had grown from 2,000 miles, and the company had extended both its coverage and its product range. Oak Hill committed capital to accelerate the build-out of fibre to the premises around the existing footprint, in Salem, Eugene and southern Oregon, and to introduce higher-capacity services reaching symmetrical speeds of up to 8 Gbps in some markets. The expansion was expected to create jobs in construction, network operations and customer service. The economics of this business rest on density: the cost of laying fibre is fixed per mile, so returns depend on how many premises along each route subscribe, and on how many of those already passed can be connected without further construction. Hunter operates in the smaller cities that the national carriers have been slower to serve, where competition is limited and take-up correspondingly higher. It was the twenty-second broadband investment made by Oak Hill and its predecessors, and took its digital infrastructure portfolio to eight fibre platforms active across 35 states, passing around five million premises and adding more than a million each year. Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison advised Oak Hill Capital.
